Harley Davidson m fl glidarhojar

Jetting a Harley carburetor requires adjusting the pilot jet (idle), needle (mid-range), and main jet (wide-open throttle) to compensate for air density changes. As a rule, change jet sizes by one step for every 20°F to 30°F temperature drop (or rise), and richen the mixture in the cold. [1, 2, 3]

Temperature and Air Density Guidelines
Colder air is denser, meaning it contains more oxygen, which forces the engine to run lean unless you add more fuel. [1, 2]
  • Winter / Freezing (Below 45°F): Engine runs leanest. You may need to go 1-2 sizes richer on your pilot and main jets to prevent sputtering.
  • Spring / Fall (45°F–70°F): This is usually the baseline temperature for factory jetting.
  • Summer (Above 70°F): Air is less dense. You generally run the leanest setups or stock factory jets. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Step-by-Step Jetting Process
  1. Warm up the engine: Always jet or tune your carb with a fully warmed-up motor. Ride for about 15–20 minutes first. [1, 2, 3]
  2. Adjust the Pilot Jet (Idle to 1/4 throttle): If the bike has trouble idling or coughs at low speeds, adjust the idle mixture screw. Turn the screw out (counter-clockwise) to richen or in (clockwise) to lean. The ideal sweet spot is usually between 1.5 to 2.5 turns out from being gently seated. If it falls outside of this range, swap to a larger or smaller pilot jet. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  3. Adjust the Needle (1/4 to 3/4 throttle): If the bike bogs or surges when you roll on the throttle, you can adjust the needle. Moving the clip down raises the needle, letting in more fuel. Moving the clip up lowers it, leaning out the mixture. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  4. Adjust the Main Jet (3/4 to Full throttle): If the bike lacks power at wide-open throttle, you need to change the main jet size. [1, 2, 3]

How to Check Your Jetting (Plug Reading)
The most reliable way to tell if your jetting is accurate is to read your spark plugs. After running the bike through the throttle range, kill the engine, pull over, and check the plug color: [1, 2, 3]
  • Tan or Light Brown: Perfect air/fuel ratio (aiming for ~12.5:1 to 15:1).
  • Dark Brown or Black: Running too rich. (Needs smaller jets or a lowered needle).
  • Light Gray or White: Running dangerously lean. (Needs larger jets or a raised needle). [1, 2, 3]
