Stoner: “In general we have to be happy because we’re setting the pace at the moment but we have to continue this tomorrow. In a lot of races this season we’ve been fast on a Friday but not able to improve and lost ground to the others so we want to make sure that doesn’t happen here. I’m not looking to be first in practice, I would like to be first at the end of the race on Sunday.”

Hayden: The session didn’t go quite as well as I’d hoped but we got a good base and learned a few things,” said Hayden, who was 1.203s off team-mate and quickest rider Casey Stoner. “Casey going so fast is a good thing for us because it shows the potential of the bike at this track even though we know he is really special around here.”

Nån som hört mer om det Lyon sa om Edwards? Att han redan signat ett WSBK-kontrakt med Ducati Xerox inför 2011? Jag har i alla fall missat detta helt.

Bridgestone MotoGP Preview - Round 9: United States, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Tuesday 20 July 2010

Bridgestone slick compounds available:
Front: Medium, Hard.
Rear: Medium, Hard (asymmetric)

Round nine of the season takes the MotoGP paddock to North America for the first time in 2010, to the peninsula of Monterey on the west cost of California. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is one of the most famous and iconic circuits on the calendar, and this season Bridgestone have adopted a different approach. This year Bridgestone have selected asymmetric rear slick tyres for the United States Grand Prix, having listened to calls from riders following last year’s race. The asymmetric rear slicks comprise a harder compound in the left shoulder, for improved durability and stability at high temperature, and a softer compound in the right shoulder, for improved warm-up performance. This softer right shoulder will be particularly beneficial through turns three, four and ten, the circuit’s main right-handed corners. Laguna Seca is the shortest circuit on the calendar with a short main straight of just 0.9km, meaning the tyres spend less time upright and therefore have less time to cool down, resulting in higher tyre temperatures than the ambient and track conditions would suggest. The circuit’s elevation changes, particularly through the Corkscrew complex, require a good machine setup, and place a lot of importance on the performance of the front tyre.

Hiroshi Yamada – Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Department

“This is our first visit to America this year, and it is always exciting to go to a world-famous circuit such as Laguna Seca. The circuit has produced some memorable MotoGP battles in recent times, and there have been four different winners in as many years, so I am looking forward to another good race. I think this grand prix also demonstrates well our philosophy in MotoGP, which is to continually improvement and provide the best support to teams and riders we can. After listening to comments from last year, we have selected asymmetric rear tyres for this season which I believe will help increase the safety for riders and improve the show.”

Tohru Ubukata – Manager, Bridgestone Motorcycle Tyre Development Department

“Laguna Seca is the shortest circuit on the calendar but this doesn’t make it any easier for the tyres. The Corkscrew is a really demanding corner with the fast change of direction and elevation and a strong front tyre is very important to cope with the elevation changes. Performance through the right-handed corners is critical, and this is where we have focused our improvements this year. “Last year we saw some crashes through turn ten during qualifying and we spoke at length with the riders, listened carefully to what they had to say and deeply analysed the situation, and as a result we have selected asymmetric rear tyres for this year to give the riders more confidence and better grip through the right-handers. The softer right shoulder has a wider temperature operating range and better warm-up, so I am feeling confident about tyre performance.”

Stoner sets fast pace to top timesheets after first practice

Round 9: United States GP – Free Practice Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Friday 23 July 2010

Bridgestone slick compounds available:
Front: Medium, Hard.
Rear: Medium, Hard (asymmetric)

Ducati Team’s Casey Stoner set the fastest lap during the first hour of practice and, using Bridgestone’s asymmetric rear slicks for the first time at Laguna Seca, he was already just 0.02seconds from last year’s pole time. Jorge Lorenzo was second fastest for the Fiat Yamaha Team and Andrea Dovizioso was third for Repsol Honda, whilst three American riders finished in the top eight: the Monster Yamaha Tech3 duo of Ben Spies and Colin Edwards in fifth and eighth respectively and Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden in seventh.

Conditions during the session were fine and the track temperature reached a high of 45 degrees Celsius, giving riders a chance to try both the harder and softer front and rear slick tyres. Stoner and Lorenzo set their best laps using a harder front and softer option rear, whilst Dovizioso favoured the harder rear. Today’s times show that the asymmetric rears are working well, although their real benefit of improved warm-up performance from the softer right side of the tyre will be shown tomorrow morning when the temperature will be cooler and therefore good warm-up performance more important.

With the absence of tyre competition in MotoGP the basis for competitive comparison has become lap records, in this instance set by Stoner back in 2008 in the final year of tyre competition. After only the first hour of running on a dirty track Stoner was only 0.2seconds slower than the lap record, indicating promising performance from Bridgestone’s asymmetric rear slick tyres at the start of this grand prix weekend.

Tohru Ubukata – Manager, Bridgestone Motorcycle Tyre Development Department

“The circuit was quite dirty today but still the laptimes were fast so I am happy with tyre performance, particularly of our asymmetric rears. They were well received by the riders and contributed to the fast laptimes. The asymmetric rears provide better warm-up performance through the right-handers and good stability and consistency through the lefts, giving the riders more confidence to attack. As conditions improve throughout the weekend the laptimes will get faster and I expect a new lap record on Sunday.”
