The Monster Kawasaki team will hit the winter testing season hard with a shakedown test at California Speedway next week prior to a follow-on joint test with Kawasaki's World and All Japan Superbike teams in Sepang, Malaysia.
Monster Kawasaki's Jamie Hacking and Roger Lee Hayden will first head to Fontana to make sure everything’s in place before the new ZX-10R’s get shipped to Malaysia for the Sepang test. Both riders tested early this off-season at Kawasaki's Autopolis track in Japan, though on nearly stock motorcycles.
Roger Lee certainly won't lack for advice about the Sepang Circuit. Both of his brothers have been to Sepang; Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden has extensive testing and racing experience at the track, while Tommy Hayden had a serious accident on the Yoshimura Suzuki last November, a crash that adversely affected his entire 2007 season.
Kawasaki Japan requested this test, which will also include the World Superbike team of Regis Laconi and Makoto Tamada, as well as the All Japan Superbike team. It will be the first time that all of Kawasaki’s Superbike teams have tested in the same place at the same time.
Monster Kawasaki team manager Mike Preston said one of the big reasons for the test was that it made logistical sense for the factory.
“It’s easy for them to get over there," he said. "We’re hoping for warm weather. I’ll rain for sure, at one time or another. Hopefully we’ll have good weather.”
For the Monster Kawasaki team, it’s a chance to thoroughly test a number of components that weren’t available when they first tested the new machines at Daytona in December. To make sure they're track ready, the bikes will first be tested at Fontana next Thursday and Friday, Jan. 10-11.
“It’s just a shakedown for a few parts we have to make sure everything’s good before we ship the bikes off to Sepang,” Preston said. “We’re going to ship a couple of our bikes and obviously (Kawasaki Japan) will bring stuff. A lot of the stuff we’ll been trying is stuff we haven’t got." Among the new parts are new Ohlins forks and shocks, suspension linkages, and “odds and ends. We’ll try to check all those parts to make sure we’re good to go.”
The Malaysia test is Jan. 20-21, after which the MotoGP riders, including Nicky Hayden and teammate Dani Pedrosa, arrive for their first test of 2008. Hacking and Roger Lee Hayden will be back at Fontana for the final pre-season all-teams test on Feb. 5-6.
