Idag är det exakt 30 år sedan underbarnet Tommy Bolin dog 25 år gammal. En av världens mest innovativa och begåvade gitarrister någonsin, vare sig det var hårdrock i Deep Purple, fusionjazz med Billy Cobham och Jan Hammer, reggae,rock,pop och soulutflykter på soloplattorna eller funkrock med James Gang så passade Tommy som handen i handsken. Tyvärr var hans liv en enda röra och slutade alldeles för tidigt, epitetet "den tragiska konstnärsjälen" har väl sällan passat bättre. Den ofta citerade inledningen till Wild Dogs är samma typ av rop på hjälp som Phil Lynott använde sig av i sina texter och som blir uppenbara först i efterhand.

Tommy Bolin was an artist maybe only in line with a David Bowie. But unfortunately he never achieved that level of success - he seemed to grow bored of his own styles before they had a chance to catch on or become vogue. He moved through musical phases quickly - jazz, fusion, rock, reggae, metal and funk. He mixed these together frequently as well. I never met the man and that saddens me, because I lived and breathed his music for many years and it was (and is) a major influence on me, my music, my life. Whether his guitar was heard with the James Gang, Deep Purple, Billy Cobham or on his solo LP's, he was ahead of his time. - Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue
For instance, my tune ‘Sister Andrea’ – we did a version of it with Tommy. His solo on that is definitive – the way I thought the tune should sound. I don’t think we ever did anything close to it with Mahavishnu. We never did it justice. I think Tommy picked it up instantly. The second I played him the groove, and the solo section where the guitar would play, he just took off instinctively and did exactly what I would hear there. It was amazing. He was really the ideal guitar player. Inspiration just flowed through him. It was almost visible. It’s hard to describe. I learned a lot from just watching and listening to him.
