Honda CB1000R 2008

92 kW / 10000 varv - 125 hkr

“The engine is an absolute peach. Honda have put in a detuned 2007 Fireblade engine but given it loads more midrange and the result is one of the best engines fitted to any naked."

“The bike will pull in sixth gear in town and give you monstrous acceleration out of tight turns."

“The chassis is agile and quick steering yet it is very stable at motorway speed. This is going to be a hard bike to beat.”

Jag har fått upp hoppet lite grann efter besvikelsen över effekten.

SuperBike Magazine
"April 13, 2008 - Roots

Simon's fresh off the boat from Milan with tales to tell from the launch of the new Honda CB1000R. What with a rocking motor, decent chassis and impressive looks, you can't go wrong. Surely. We'll let Simon take up the story.

Everything was going so well, until we got to Milan. The north of Italy in April is a hit or miss affair in terms of the weather – and we definitely scored a miss. It rained for most of the morning, and by the time it dried out we had to race across Milan to get our plane back into Terminal Five. Just when you thought your day couldn't get any worse…

But what I experienced on the bike was good. Potentially really good. In fact, potentially really, really good. The looks speak for themselves, and it's a fairly radical departure for Honda to build a bike as extreme looking as this. But the fact of the matter is that this has been a European led project from the start, so what you see hasn't been sanitised by the Japanese.

Dynamically, the bike works well. How could it not with the 2007 CBR1000RR motor in it. The retune sees plenty of torque added to the lump, and this is perfect for blasting round busy urban roads and plenty of quiet country ones too. Unfortunately we experienced more of the former than the latter, but I certainly got the gist. Everything else worked well, the fuel injection was good, the gearbox slick , the controls easy.

I can't tell you too much about the bike's handling as it was wet, but it was confident enough in these conditions. Brakes are straight off the 2008 'blade and the suspension is fully adjustable so all the right boxes are ticked. No one fell off in rubbish conditions, so that speaks volumes.

But ultimately, it's a case of undiscovered potential. The bikes won't be in the country until July, but we should be able to get hold of one in a few weeks to put it through its paces. For around £7,000 it looks to be competitively priced too, so we can't wait to have a dry run on the thing. So long as it's not in that rotten olive colour.”

Jag skulle själv vilja testa den mot Triumphs Speed Triple.

TWO, Two Wheels Only:

“On climbing aboard, my first impression was that for a 1000cc motorcycle the seat height was quite low, but on closer inspection found it is the skinny seat contour that keeps your legs closer together, which in turn gives you more leg length. Helpful for shorties.

At tick over you can hardly hear or feel the engine running, which didn't bother me, but I know some that would prefer their naked bikes more noisy even when standing still. Not to worry as all changes when on the move, especially in a high gear at low revs when you get the best growl ever from a Japanese street bike, er, well okay its made in Italy.

A smooth pick up transfers in to a truckload of torque at 7000rpm tapering off at the 10,250rpm red line just before the 11,000rpm rev limiter. The huge mid range grunt means you must keep your wits about you in damp as you'll easily get wheel spin under hard acceleration bang on 7000rpm but it also makes big wheelies a doddle so we mustn't grumble.

I found the low speed handling fairly light considering the 217kg maximum weight and 26 degree head angle and the forks provided first-rate bump absorption even on standard settings.

When I jump on an Aprilia Tuono or a Triumph Speed Triple, I instantly turn into a hooligan. These two bikes constantly encourage me to do naughty things, like wheelies, stoppies and sometimes even make me break the speed limit. Strangely, I found the Honda quite the opposite. Sure, it's more than capable of matching (and topping) all the opposition's tricks and performance, but instead of feeling pumped full of adrenalin while riding, I became calm and relaxed.”
