Pikes Peak is an addiction for me, and the SDR just pumped it up a giant notch. This was my best and worst year yet. I qualified front row in the 1200 class, smoked a great hole-shot, and led the pack for a mile or so. Got passed by Greg Tracey (class winner) and then had my first crash in seven years when I overshot the Picnic Grounds straightaway. I crashed into a ravine after burning the straight at somewhere north of 120mph (best speed on my 610 had been around 90 so all my breaking points were bad references). Held it a bit too long and slid off the hot pavement when greasy rains couldn’t cash the check my exuberance and right wrist had written. Just didn’t count on the extra speed and weight melting my rain tyres the way they did. Got spectators to pull the bike back up on the course and then finished a disappointing 9th. O well, I was going for it... I hope to have a little better self control and feel for the higher speeds next year.
