Capirossi shunts Harada into gravel trap to take world championship

Kamikaze move at last corner of race

Capirossi knew he'd done wrong from the moment he glanced over his shoulder at the tumbling bike and body of his title challenger Tetsuya Harada (Team Aprilia Racing). With Valentino Rossi 30 meters ahead and already straightening up for the blast to the chequered flag, Loris Capirossi (Team Aprilia Racing) was maybe 5 meters behind Harada as they tipped into the very tight right-hander just before the start/finish straightaway. There was no way for Capirossi to pass Harada and this would mean that they would tie on points and Harada would win the title based on his 6 wins to Capirossi's 2. This was a case of deja vu again, with the nightmare of the '93 season flashing through the Italian's mind. That year he had gone into the last GP with a 10 point lead and had come away 4 points short of the championship winner Harada. He was not going to let it happen again.

As Harada moved off the bike to take the corner, leaving perhaps just a fraction of room on the inside, Capirossi let off the brakes and lunged at the space on the inside that just was not there. He came under Harada and rammed him about mid-bike, sending the bike and rider off into the dirt and almost loosing it himself. He was prepared to take both of them out if it meant winning the world title. He toured round the corner and over the line, totally subdued, no wild gesticulations that should have indicated the ecstasy winning a world championship would bring to any rider. Back in the pits he could scarcely raise a smile, clearly troubled at the steps he had had to take to win the championship. Back at the last corner, Harada could just stand behind the barrier, eyes wide as saucers, looking into the distance and absorb the cruellest defeat of his career.

Capirossi had done everything right in practice. He had set a storming pole position at the very end of the session, more than 0.5 seconds faster than Olivier Jacque (Chesterfield Elf Tech 3 Honda), almost a second faster than his Aprilia colleagues. His start was not good, the lights being held on red for longer than usual, and he was back in 6th. place at the end of the first lap. Jacque and Harada on the other hand were well away and shared the lead for the first 4 laps. Harada started to get away from Jacque as Capirossi pulled through to take third place from Tohru Ukawa (Benetton Honda) and Roberto Rolfo. Capirossi was clearly the fastest rider on the track and closed on Harada to take the lead on lap 9. Harada seemed to be caught out by the move, but recovered well and slotted in behind Capirossi.

The two Aprilia riders rode together for the rest of the race, with Capirossi seeming stronger, but Harada taking the lead a couple of times. Jacque fell back after the bike seemed to seize on lap 17, but he kept going and fell in with Ukawa, nursing the bike home. Valentino Rossi (Nastro Azzurro Aprilia) had also had a disastrous start and took 12 laps to get back to third place, his grid position. Initially he kept his distance from the Capirossi/Harada battle, staying about 1 second behind the duo. On lap 23, Harada had been leading but ran wide on a medium fast lefthander, letting Capirossi and Rossi through. On the last lap, Capirossi also made a mistake and Rossi was past and pulling away. Capirossi was still in line for the championship, but coming off the back straight, Harada swept past the Italian into second and the championship looked to be his. Capirossi had 3 corners to decide what to do and steel himself to do it. On the last corner he did it.
